Applications must be filed with the Sheriff of the county in which you reside

Permit to Carry

A new permit to carry requires a fee of $50 and a valid driver’s license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. It also requires a training class taken within the previous 24 months or a DD214 with honorable/under honorable discharge. You must appear in person to apply. The permits are valid for five years from the date of issue.

Renewal permits to carry are $25.00, you will need to apply within 30 days before or within 30 days after your permit expiration date to be eligible for a renewal permit. You must appear in person to apply.

If the permit is denied, the $50.00 fee will be reimbursed to the applicant.

Permit to Acquire Weapons

A permit to acquire weapons requires a fee of $25 and a valid driver’s license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. A permit to acquire is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.

If the permit is denied, the $25.00 fee will be reimbursed to the applicant.
